The National Institute of Immigration in Mexico City has requested that the following information be diffused to all persons travelling to Mexico:

Persons seeking entry into Mexico may be requested to show, at the port of entry, evidence tha they have sufficient funds to stay for the length they applied for. This can be cash, credit cards or  traveller's cheques. The minimum amount established is US$50.00 per day or US$25.00 when accommodation has already been paid. Also you will need to show a return airline ticket.

The above statement does not mean that they necessarily have to spend those amounts in Mexico, the immigration authorities merely wish to be reassured that tourists will not have financial difficulties while visiting Mexico.

Tourists are NOT allowed to work in Mexico!
